Hello,
Please forgive me for writing in English.
My Slovak paternal ancestors emigrated from Pivnica to America in 1904-1906.
The name of your town was Pinced at that time when it was part of the old Kingdom of Hungary. My father's family were Evangelical Lutherans, and spoke Slovak and German. The names of my ancestors from Pivnice that I know are
Istvan TARNOCZI (b. 1845), Istvan TARNOCZI (b. 1877), Istvan TARNOCZI (my father, b. 1901), Andrej TARNOCZI (b. 1903), Mike CINCURAK (b. 1838), Sam CINCURAK (b. 1865), Julia CINCURAK (b. 1876), Susan COBRDA (b. 1839) and Anna GY?EGA (b. 1847).
I was pleasantly surprised to discover the very fine Pivnica web site. The "Príchod Slovákov do Pivnice" page was very interesting - a member of the Delphi Genealogy Czech and Slovak Republic Forums was kind enough to translate the page into English. The COBRDA family from Hlboky is mentioned, and I would guess that my paternal great-grandmother Susan COBRDA is from that family. Today there are Cobrdas listed in the Slovak Telephone Directory for the village of Hlboke north of Bratislava. I would be indebted if you could provide me any more information about my
ancestors.
I am sure that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pivnice would have recorded their births, marriages, etc., but I do not know how to gain access to those church records. Are there any other archives I could search?
Are there land, tax, census, emigration or other civil records? Are any of the family names I listed above familiar to you?
I apologize for all the questions. Any information at all will be most
welcome. Best wishes to all of you in Pivnice from Maryland, USA!
Stephen Z. Turney, M.D.
